The earthquake that hit Haiti is the largest natural disaster to hit the Western Hemisphere this century. The death toll is over 200,000 and there are over a million displaced. How can you help? Here is a short list of ways to donate as well as a local benefit that raised thousands of dollars in Regent Square.
We all remember the "We Are The World" song written by Micheal Jackson and Lionel Richie for Africa. Twenty-five years later the song was remade for Haiti. Check out: www.wearetheworldfoundation.org. Here you can view the video (which includes a number of Haitian artists)and download the song. When you download, you can make a contribution to the "We Are The World Foundation" who is turn donates to specific Haitian relief groups. Thier contributions will be documented on the website. "Save The Children" has had programs running in Haiti for over thirty years. They have projects on five continents
and are top rated by charity watchdogs. They offer programs ranging from prenatal care to literacy and immunizations for some of the poorest children in the world. For more information about thier efforts in Haiti, visit: www.savethechildren.org.
A benefit called "Haiti Rising" was held at The Map Room, directly below the Pittsburgh Center for Complementary Health and Healing. The benefit was Sunday the 21st, from 4pm-10pm. There waslive music, basket raffles (including a massage gift certificate form us!),
and traditional Haitian food. In addition to this, they had special guests from Haiti as well as those who plan to go, who spoke about thier experiences. All procedes will be going towards the rebuilding of St Damien's Hospital in Haiti; the only pediatric hospital that offers services free of charge. Here is a link to the hospital website:
