Call us
I’m sure we’ve all had our moments when stress takes over and the word ‘escape’ comes to mind. Or when plans change and you find a free hour to do what you want with. Sometimes I act on impulse and just get away for a brief time. I usually find myself wanting to go outdoors, and I still go out for walks in the winter, but there is an indoor place that is a haven of sorts for me. It’s become one of my favorite places to be. It’s the prayer labyrinth at East Liberty Presbyterian Church. Just going into such an old, quiet building from the hustle of the city is comforting on its own, but down in the gym is where the real magic happens for me. They have a giant canvas covering the floor with a labyrinth printed on it. There is soft music playing and candles lit all around from previous visitors. You take off your shoes and walk along the pattern at your own pace. If I’m mad or confused about something I usually start out walking so fast! But then the constant tracing of the pattern slows down something within me and my paces follow suit. By the time I’m finished I am just moseying along, so calmed down and happy to be just where I am, but also with a renewed energy for what’s outside the church doors. A prayer labyrinth traditionally has Christian roots, but I don’t follow an organized religion and find that the walks can be for just about anyone looking to spend some quiet time by themselves. The labyrinth is open to the public Monday 10am-3pm and Wednesday 10am-9pm. It is free and there are security guards. For more information on the labyrinth go to cathedralofhope.org and click on programs.
